The Aleatoric Process

Fascinated by the great artists of the early 20th century- the Surrealists, the Dada Movement and particularly those who used chance in the commission of their works throughout history- fine art photographer J. Coleman Miller has created a new twist on aleatoric composition. Capturing the swirling colors of Koi and the reflections that dance on the rippling surface of a clear pond, slow moving wafts of smoke, intricate rock formations and crumpled metal, magical images and new fantasies come to life.

“Magicians often use metaphorical smoke and mirrors to conceal the expected. Miller's magic often uses actual smoke and mirrors to reveal the unexpected.”

Chance Encounters

“These works convey a deep sense of emotional connection, touching viewers with engaging, dramatic images and unearthing darker, ghostly scenes as though from a childhood dream.”

Accidents, try to change them - it's impossible! The accidental reveals man. -Pablo Picasso

“Somewhere between representation and abstraction, J. Coleman Miller finds a new kind of surrealist expressionism. Eerie aqueous faces of angst and passion hidden within diaphanous veils of liquid flesh. Floral fluids teeming with twisted crickets. Tortured spirits embroiled in gaseous infernos. Nebulous glacial prehistoria infected with fractal relfections and vitreous pathogens. Sultry vaporous nymphs smoldering in the molten pools of aleatoric magma from which the earliest signs of art emerged. The mysterious images of J. Coleman Miller evoke wonder and delight without allowing us to fall victim to our usual inner censors who squelch the child in us and cast judgement based on what is known. Miller’s art invites us to see what we don’t yet believe exists.”

Disaster and Opportunity

“Art is a metaphor for life and aleatoric art is a metaphor for a more holistic, green, or globally conscious lifestyle that cooperates with our planet and it’s chaotic, and thus indestructible, balance. Aleatoria is an analogous model for peaceful co-existence and for an understanding and belief in the perfect equilibrium that has been achieved by evolution, in alignment with Eastern philosophy in which disaster and opportunity are synonymous.”

The New Collage Works-

“Master Aleatorician J Coleman Miller, responding to the resurgence of interest in happenstantial art among collectors and critics, delivers a newly hewn body of alea-digital work that defines a unique niche in contemporary art. Layering of his own digital inventions with works of other aleatoric masters creates collaborative explorations into the infinite densities of color shadow and light that is the fabric of visual art and thus is the medium Miller manipulates.

Miller's avid affinity for infinity is in full flower as he spelunks the innards of your imagination with abstract sensuality and spatial disruption previously unspelunked by creative minds. By alternately squelching and squandering the chromatic gamut of diaphanous dioramas, visceral organisms emerge from gurgling cauldrons of Jovian atmospheric plasma. And by encouraging the intermingling of antimaterial metaphors, amorphous anomalies propagate unrestrained into the extradimensional void between consciousness and oblivion.”
